NEW YEAR’S EVE had always been a quiet night for Clark and Jody

and invariably spent apart. As head of the emergency room, Jody felt it was his responsibility to be there on one of the busiest nights of the year, and fortunately, Clark had always understood.

This year, things were different. Jody was on vacation, and celebrating together, even hosting a party, had been met with enthusiasm as the couple went all out with their preparations. Grier was very surprised when Lil asked him to dress in something other than blue jeans and his Harley jacket and boots.

“Why?”

“We’re not the only guests.”

“I can’t believe Clark’s putting on a show in front of an audience,” Grier commented.

“I don’t think he will,” Lil said. “In fact, I can almost promise you he won’t.” “So much for the dance-off.”

“The guests won’t be there all night.”

“And we will?”

“Yes.”

“I see. So Clark and I will be your midnight snack?” “Something like that.” Lil grinned. “Do you object?”

“Heck, no,” Grier said, seizing Lil’s arm and drawing him up against his chest. “What about Jody?” he asked, sucking on Lil’s lower lip and grinding against him. “Will he freak?”

“I don’t think so.” By the time they arrived, the circular driveway, and half the street was full of Escalades, Land Cruisers, and other assorted SUVs. Most of the Chicago Bears were in attendance, along with their spouses and significant others. Jody’s doctor friends made up the rest of the guest list, and Grier felt completely out of place. He reached for a champagne flute from the tray held high by a tuxedo-clad waiter. “Jesus, if I had known there would be so many people, I would have bailed,” he whispered in Lil’s ear.

“You look fabulous, love, and heads have been turning since we walked in. Don’t let them intimidate you; it’s a good networking opportunity, if nothing else.”

“What am I networking?” Grier asked, looking more than a little freaked.

“Your future,” Lil said and kissed him lightly on the lips. “Go forth and conquer.” Grier adjusted his tie and made a mental checklist of his wardrobe. He did look good, thanks to Lil, whose taste in clothing was indisputable. The deep plum-colored dinner jacket was offset by a soft butter yellow shirt that looked amazing against the backdrop of his dark looks. It was a Brioni, an Italian brand he’d never heard of until Lil brought it home from one of his business trips, insisting that Grier might need it one day. He’d been wise enough not to ask the cost or he would have made Lil take it back. Nonetheless, he had to admit that it suited him to a T, and he blended easily into the crowd.

Grier wasn’t a groupie, but being in a room surrounded by a bunch of athletes he’d admired from a distance was a little exciting. He put his best game face on and forged ahead, quelling his fears with more champagne. If Lil could do it, so could he. By the time he was on his third glass, he had a pleasant buzz going and felt his inhibitions sliding away.
